46th Annual Air Safety Forum

ALPA's 46th Annual Air Safety Forum was held August 16 and 17 in Washington, DC. ALPA safety volunteers, industry representatives, and government officials participated in the two-day session which included subjects ranging from air rage, runway incursions, and FAA Implementation and Regulation, to wildlife hazards.
ALPA President Duane Woerth was the keynote speaker at an awards dinner where he presented ALPA's top Air Safety Award to Captain Ray Brice of United Airlines for his proven dedication to ALPA's United Airlines pilot group and our union, as a whole, and the real difference he has made in improving the safety of commercial air travel for flight crews and their passengers.
Superior Airmanship Awards were presented to the crew of Delta Flight 225 (Capt. Douglas Kasemeier of Lilburn, Ga., First Officer Marty Cavato of Oviedo, Fla., and Second Officer Henry Turner III of Landrum, S.C.) and TWA Flight 885 (Capt. Robert Laux of Cherry Hill, N.J., First Officer Eric Drennen (now a B727 captain) of Chicora, Pa., and Relief Officer Kurt Anderson (now an MD-80 captain) of Ann Arbor, Mich.).
Presidential Citations for Outstanding Service in Air Safety were awarded to TWA Capt. Jack Harris of Jax, Fla., TWA First Officer William Tiedge, Jr., of Saint Charles, Mo., United Capt. York Hird, of Huntington Beach, Calif., and United Capt. Jeff Sakuda.
Captain Ted Murphy, IFALPA President, presented Presidential citations to those dedicated individuals who have devoted more than two years of their lives to finding the answers behind the Swissair Flight 111 accident. The citation was awarded to the Swissair Flight 111 Investigation Team "for enhancing the professional status of all flight crews by their outstanding contribution to reconstructing the MD-11 and all of its systems" and "for aiding in the development of sophisticated computer technology as a primary investigative tool."
Prior to the start of the meeting, safety volunteers spent two days discussing the goals and achievements of their individual groups. These group meetings included:

- Aircraft Design/Operations Group
- Airport Ground Environment Group
- Air Traffic Services Group
- Canadian Safety Issues
- Human Factors/Pilot Training Group
- Inflight Fire Project Team
- Major and Code Shares for Internal and Common Issues
- MEC Training Workshop
- Operations Committee
New to the forum was a chance for vendors including BAE Systems, Honeywell International, Integrated Terminal Weather Systems (ITWS), Phillips Aviation Group, and Sennheiser, to showcase their goods to members.
