In remarks to the 37th Regular Meeting of ALPA's Board of Directors, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney praised ALPA and the pilots of Northwest Airlines for the solid front they presented during the strike at that carrier, and urged members to continue the gains made by America's unions over the past several years.

The meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m. upon completion of all business.
Dr. Julius Maldutis, managing director and aviation and transportation analyst in the Equity Research Department at CIBC Oppenheimer, addressed the fourth day of the 37th regular meeting of ALPA's Board of Directors Thursday. Dr. Maldutis said he believed the industry could avoid the dismal financial performances of the past because of changes that have already been made in airline management, because of a projected aircraft shortage he foresees over the next 15-20 years, and because of the influence of the Internet on ticket distribution methods.

Retiring Association General Manager Howard Pike, who has served under three ALPA presidents, was made an honorary ALPA member.
Airline Systems Meetings were conducted to provide pilot leaders an opportunity to exchange ideas on how to deal proactively with issues related to domestic airline partnterships.

Northwest MEC Chairman Captain Steve Zoller told the plenary session of ALPA's Board of Directors meeting Tuesday morning that the level of involvement from all facets of the organization was critical to the strike's positive outcome. "No one flew solo. . . We were a team. . . The value of a strong, well-organized, well-financed union cannot be overemphasized."
The Northwest representatives also presented a resolution to publicly recognize the support of Northwest's code-share partners, particularly the pilots of Mesaba and Express Airlines, who experienced a lockout and shutdown of services during the strike at the mainline.
The Northwest MEC thanked the Mesaba and Express pilots for their "public, moral and operational support" during the job action.
Several other individuals retiring from board service were also recognized during the morning session.
